Mikel Joachim, PhD

Mikel Joachim, PhD is the research program manager for Badger Athletic Performance at the University of Wisconsin and also holds a research scientist role with the group. Mikel leads the running biomechanics and injury research team within BAP. Broadly, her research priorities center on identifying risk factors for injuries in distance runners. Her dissertation work focused on prospectively identifying both biomechanical and psychosocial risk factors for injury in collegiate and high school cross country runners. Currently, she is working to expand on this research by developing pre-season testing protocols that also incorporate muscle and tendon characteristics to gain a more comprehensive understanding of what combination of factors may put a runner at risk for a specific injury. Mikel routinely presents running research at CSM, ACSM, and other national conferences and has published numerous articles on running mechanics and injury in the top sports medicine and physical therapy journals.
